But there's hardly any work to be had on the island ... and all the more in America. You head for the West. Like two and a half thousand others from Föhr, half the island's population.
You embark on a long and arduous voyage for a new life in America. You've made a success of it, and you create a family in the country you now call home. But you never lose your ties to the island of Föhr. Things haven't changed. The ties between emigrants and returnees have remained close. Almost every family on Föhr has their own emigration story to tell. And they'll tell it with pride.
